The commercialization of hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty trucks is accelerating, with infrastructure development emerging as a key focus.

Against the backdrop of the global low-carbon transition in the transportation sector, hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty trucks are accelerating their march toward the commercial application stage, leveraging advantages such as long range, fast refueling, and zero emissions. Compared with the range anxiety of all-electric heavy-duty trucks in long-haul transportation scenarios, hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty trucks can achieve a range of over 800 kilometers on a single refueling, with refueling time taking only 10-15 minutes. This makes them an ideal choice for high-load logistics, mining area transportation, and cross-regional freight. Currently, major markets including China, Europe, and North America have successively launched hydrogen heavy-duty truck demonstration projects, and some vehicle models have entered the commercial operation stage, marking that hydrogen heavy-duty trucks are moving from technical verification to large-scale promotion.
However, the popularization of hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty trucks still faces a key challenge: the inadequacy of infrastructure such as hydrogen refueling stations. Due to the high technical threshold for hydrogen storage and transportation, the construction cost of hydrogen refueling stations is much higher than that of traditional gas stations and charging stations, resulting in the global hydrogen refueling network still being in the initial development stage. To break through this bottleneck, governments and enterprises around the world are increasing policy support and investment. For instance, China clearly proposed accelerating the layout of hydrogen refueling stations in its "14th Five-Year Plan", and some provinces and cities provide high subsidies for the construction of hydrogen refueling stations; the European Union, through its "Hydrogen Highway" plan, promotes the interconnection of cross-border hydrogen refueling networks. At the same time, advancements in technologies such as liquid hydrogen storage and transportation, and hydrogen pipeline transportation are expected to further reduce the cost of the hydrogen energy supply chain, providing support for the large-scale construction of hydrogen refueling stations.
In terms of business models, the "vehicle-driven station construction" has become the mainstream strategy at present. Some logistics enterprises have joined hands with energy companies to build hydrogen refueling stations along freight trunk lines, forming a closed-loop operation system of "hydrogen heavy-duty trucks + hydrogen refueling network". In addition, innovative solutions such as hydrogen-electric hybrid heavy-duty trucks and mobile hydrogen refueling equipment are also being explored to alleviate the promotion resistance caused by insufficient infrastructure. In the future, with the improvement of the hydrogen energy industry ecosystem, hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty trucks are expected to take the lead in realizing large-scale application in high-emission scenarios such as port logistics and steel transportation, and become an important driving force for deep decarbonization in the transportation sector.
Overall, the commercialization process of hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty trucks is accelerating, but the supporting construction of infrastructure remains a key factor determining their market penetration. Driven by policy support, technological progress, and business model innovation, hydrogen heavy-duty trucks are expected to witness explosive growth in the next 5-10 years, providing a sustainable solution for global green freight.
